My little girl goes to bed at around 20.30 to 21.00. It takes her alittle while to get comfortable but after 20 mins she goes to sleep, which isfairly normal. Then it could be 20 mins oran hour later she wakes up crying in pain, not dreaming, not looking forattention but clearly in PAIN. This goes on all night. The muscles in her tummy seem to be in spasm..She pulls her tummy in and out, holding it in as long as she can, lifting upher bum. We can hear her tummyrattling. She throws herself about, tryingto sit forward, trying to get comfortable but cannot. This goes on all night. This is going on for months. She has no quality of life because during theday she is tired and irritable and at night she is in pain. She started crying in pain the other night at1.30am and didn’t stop until 5.30am. She has been diagnosed with severeconstipation but she is medicated for this and that thankfully is undercontrol. She is almost 17 months and wehave been told that it will pass when she is 2. But what will pass? I really don’t think that she is going towake up the morning she is 2 and be pain free. I wish that was the case. We aredue to see a specialist in Dublin in 2 weeks time. Has anyone else any experience of this? It is the most distressing thing seeing yourlittle girl in pain every night.. We dread the night time now.

We can't give medical advice but has anyone looked at her diet. Could it be the cause. Has she a reaction to something she's eating.?
Write a list of questions for the consultant and ask when you have your visit.

Could be acid reflux - the acid from her stomach moving up and causing discomfort. Could you try letting her sleep on a slight slope with her head at the higher end?

Also, see a doctor. Good luck!

maybe reflux and cows milk allery? Has she always been like this from birth or is it recent? I see a mention of months

What was her diet before this started? Could be an allery to something like gluten if its mainly solids she is on now?

I'd echo what the others are saying. Medically I've no idea what is wrong, but maybe request tests for allergies such as dairy, gluten etc. I'm sure there is somebody you can talk to out there to start the process, even your GP should be able to help.

Reflux might be another reason, maybe try a few things that help reflux babies - I'm sure they can't hurt.... tip up the head of her bed by putting a book or two under the legs of the bed, so she's not lying flat. Does she lie on her side or her tummy? My little one has taken to doing that recently, it seems that the tummy is most comfortable for refluxy babies (although I know it isn't recommended for small babies, but at 17 months I'd imagine it's ok?) Maybe talk to your GP about using something like Gaviscon (though it may make the constipation worse) and maybe make sure she's drinking lots of water during the day and eating foods like prunes, stewed rhubard, stewed apple, etc (if she's not doing that already). Avoid highly acidic stuff like apples and orange juice - they might make reflux worse, in case it is reflux that's the problem. Also avoid eating/drinking very close to bedtime, give a good 30 mins to an hour so food is fairly well digested.

Definitely go see your doctor or have a good list of questions for your consultant. Even better to video her doing it, so you can show your consultant the video.

+1 on the video, was about to suggest that. Make note of how long each episode lasts and how many a night and how many nights. As well as you list of questions make sure you have all the details to back up how horrific the whole thing is and how it affects your daughter and household. Sounds awful, hopefully you get some answers at the consultants.
