I started running as a hobby, one day I tried to run a bit faster and did so, next day i was in agony, could barely walk or bend my knee for a few days. This lessened and I stopped running for a couple months. At first it would hurt after walking a few kilometers, the front outside of my left knee, hard to describe where the pain is, I guess in the lower bone connecting to my knee, like if my bones were grinding off each other or something. I'm not sure if it's Patellofemoral pain or not from googling as I find it difficult to describe. Anyway after a while it stopped hurting after walking, i could use a crosstrainer fine etc. I did a 5km slow jog yesterday morning at 8am and my knee was hurting all day when I would bend it (I was testing was it ok as I have a 12km hell and back next weekend). The knee bothered me all day afterwards. This morning it's pretty much back to normal. I want to find out what is wrong with me but also find out can i do hell and back if I took it slowly, or would that cause more damage. I've never had to get treated for running, would you go to a doctor or a physiotherapy clinic for this?

Physio. If you tell us where you're located you may get some recommendations.

    Thanks, i'm in D7.

You should swing by Physio Needs in Irishtown, Dublin 4. They sell all sorts of products to help with knee injuries, or any other body part. The staff will most likely know whats wrong and they would be glad to help you!

Cant make a call on it now having not Assessed the knee to see whats wrong but tbh I doubt very much hell and back is a goer.

I tried it before whilst doing gaelforce and tbh mylegs fell to pieces on the day. Hell and back isnt a straight forward flat run (as im sure you know) your muscles and joints.will be pushed to theor limit on very uneven terrain which I would.imagine would reek havoc on your legs.

i was going to start a thread similar to this but might just ask here if okay. i have a similar problem with my hip/pelvis area, just where your right pocket would be. Something that becomes progressivily worse (after a number of weeks) unless rested for a week or so. undiagnosed but i suspect inflammation.

would doing excerises to strenghten muscles in these areas prone to joint pain help strenghten and reduce risk? if so what excerises may help ?

You really need to go see a physio to get it diagnosed.

Yeah I've pretty much come to that conclusion and it pisses me off, thanks.

I have similar problems and have gone to physio for this...a really good (but painful) deep tissue massage on your glutes and thighs should really help.. your glutes and your IT band at the side of your thighs may be really tight, that's what causes a lot of knee pain.. and also weak hip flexors too.. I find foam rolling really helps to keep the knee pain... it's not pleasant at all but it works wonders.. there are plenty of good video's online on running or cycling website on how to work specific muslce groups...
