We have a ferrolli condensing gas boiler which was fitted in 2007.It was serviced at the start of the year with no issues found.Tonight it started making a lot of noise and when i checked it there was smoke coming from the top of the boiler casing. It smelt like plastic burning so I turned off the power to the boiler.Left it a few minutes and took the cover off it and found that the smoke was coming from the controls on the front of the boiler.

any idea what may have caused this or what the problem might be?

Yes sounds like something is burnt out. You've already broke the law by removing the cover.
This really is a job for an RGI
But the biggest problem is the first line of your message.

OP, you better start looking for a place to lay low. The boiler police will be after you.

Maybe not the boiler police but more than likely the common sense police

Smoke and the smell of burning / melting plastic not a good sign at all.
You were right to shut it down, but now leave it shut down.
You will need to get a registered Gas Installer to attend to it and to establish the cause of the problem.

same as what the lads have said, leave it shut down and get an rgi to look at it.
