Bargaining

Has anyone any tips for bargaining with the price of a car from dealers. If a car is advertised at €13950 for example and you went in with cash in hand (or Bank draft/cheque;) how much would you expect to bargain of the car i.e 5% or more before you walk away? I know the question is hypothetical and there are a lot of factors that come into it i.e similar cars priced in other garages and the condition/spec of the car and after sales service but I am just looking for a general guide and advice. Any opinions would be appreciated.

You've covered it in your "other factors" bit. Some cars are priced to sell. Others have margins built into the price.

Thanks Colm so its really a matter of identifying a car that interests me and comparing it with similar specced cars from other dealers and if its priced higher there would more then likely be room for manoeuvre?

    Normally, yes.
Now there will also be the car where the dealer has gotten it wrong and put too much money in it. It'll be overpriced but dealer may still hold out for big money.

If you're not happy to pay close to the asking price you'll probably come away disappointed.

As said above it all depends on the car and how much it stands the dealer and how long they've had it, once you're happy with the car just see what they can do for you.

Hey, I just changed my car a couple of months ago and found that in dublin its a different game, going in I reckoned cash was king but found on at least 3 occasions I was let walk off the forecourt with 12k in my pocket , on one of these occasions I really liked a car told the "salesman" I was way over my budget (which was true) and for the sake of €400 he let me walk and told me it would be easier do a deal if I had a trade in!!!!! Ended up going to a dealer beyond the pale and bought well under budget with just under 800 taken off, in my opinion have a good look around especially outside dublin

Yep your not going to get massive money of the car unless it's been there a long time is an undesirable model or is well overpriced. The dealer has a bottom line price on every car that they will sell it for regardless of how good you are at bargaining that won't drop they are not going to sell it to you at a loss just because your good at bargaining. You'll kind of know when you've reached the bottom line figure as they just won't be playing ball after that now what you could do is try and squeeze a service, fuel, mudflaps, mats or something like that out of them that kind of the way of getting the last drop out of them IMO.

Wasn't that nearly always going to be the case though?

That's a bit like going into a menswear suit shop on/off Grafton Street and complaining that they won't reduce the price, then going off to the same/similar shop in Kildare and getting a bigger discount.

    It's pretty simple really.
