John Clarke and Ray D'Arcy

Why was John Clarke so foolish not to give Ray D'Arcy a daily slot on 2fm back in 1999/ early 2000 ? He chose to hang on to dinosaur djs like Gogan, Fanning and O'Callaghan and allowed D'Arcy who became the most successful radio presenter of the 00s slip through his fingers.

Cos Fanning is probably the best thing ever to happen to 2fm.
Agree about the other 2 though

Dave Fanning = square peg and 2 FM is the round hole they don't go together.

Dave Fanning-the man who could have singlehandedly saved Phantom FM.....

I remember d'arcy presenting the great giveaway show briefly in the winter of 1998. He was a bridge between suzanne duffy and ruth scott i think.

Ray d'Arcy certainly filled in for Lorcan Murray weekends 2 - 6 pm in summer 1998, on 2FM.

Dave Fanning and Rick O'Shea after him on a Saturday are the only reasons I would actively tune in to 2FM. Never, ever go near it the rest of the week...

D'Arcy used to have a show on Saturday mornings on 2FM I'm nearly sure.

He presented a show on RTE 1 called Fandango that went out on Saturday mornings. Is this the show you are thinking of?

This was on 3 times per week, in the evenings during the week if I remember from 1996 - 1998. It was with Carrie Crowley.

Its is pretty interesting that darcy was only ever considered good enough to be a weekend sub dj by 2fm management. I wonder where would he be today if today fm had never hired him ?

Can't see how he would have had time for a daytime radio gig on RTE considering that he did 5 day a week on Den TV before he left to join Today FM in 1998.

He left the den in may 1998 and didnt join today fm until september 2000

But stayed with RTE after The Den until move to Today FM, doing some TV (2phat) and Radio 1 Fandango show and occasional 2FM.

Furthermore Damien McCaul was assigned to the 2fm breakfast show in march 200O and he hosted it for 2 years while also presenting the den.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Ray had a long old stint in The Den - 8 years. Those were the times I suppose.

    No definitely 2000.

Was curious as wiki lists he had the show 15 years and left dec 14...

"Ray D'Arcy originally hosted the weekday mid-morning slot for 15 years but abruptly left Today FM to rejoin RT with immediate effect in December 2014."

There's a blast from the past?

Whatever happened to 'Damo'? Thought he was great craic on the Den

His (oddly personal) wiki page (he 'regularly holidays abroad') doesn't mention anything about his current broadcasting career, if any.

I believe I heard once he was training to be a counsellor? I may have read that on boards.ie.

He was on classic hits 4fm this year doing an odd fill in. His brother Ronan was a regular weekend fill in at 2fm for a good few years but hasn't been on since last christmas.

It's interesting that he's been active recently. What were the circumstances of his departure from RTE, anyone remember?

    Voluntary, I assume?

No thats another Damien, Damien Farrelly, he also worked at 2fm tho with MaCaul during the 00s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,360 ✭✭✭Declan A Walsh

After leaving 2FM, Danien McCaul spent a few years with Q102. I'm not sure if he was ever on 4FM, unlike Damien Farrelly.

I wonder did John Clarke ever come across Ray Darcy at all when they were both with RTE, particularly when John Clarke was Head of 2FM.

McCaul has definitely filled in on a few slots on 4FM this year.

Also before that he was on 98fm for a few years at the weekends around 2 years ago

Did Damien McCaul not do the fill in on 98fm between D&D's show ending and Quilty's starting?

    That would be fifteen years:
    2000 - Year 1
    2001 - Year 2
    2002 - Year 3
    ...
    2013 - Year 14
    2014 - Year 15

The OP was talking about then Head of 2FM, John Clarke, letting Ray Darcy slip through his fingers to go to Today FM. And here it is!

So the comparison that The Parish Priest is making is between Al Porter and Ray Darcy, or maybe between Dan Healy and John Clarke!

Ok sorry, I read the title wrong. Porter couldn't lace D'Arcys running shoes either.

And Ray Foley as well. He could have been a valuable addition to their weekend schedule but instead he's stuck with Cork listeners.

Most radio presenters would probably pick a Cork audience over a Dublin one.

Are you mad. A population of 200k over a population of 1m? Sorry but Dublin has the bigger audience.

I'm not talking about the number of listeners. It's classic quality over quantity. Half your audience in Dublin are listening on stolen radios :D

I think my Dad used to know Aidan Leonard actually.

Ray D'arcy was filling in on 2FM weekends around that summer. I remember him also filling in for Lorcan Murray. It was just after he finished The Den on TV and finished up his Fandango show on RTE Radio 1 with Carrie Crowley.

Anyone else spot his now wife jenny kelly on that 2FM schedule?? :)

Ray Foleys afternoon show on Today FM now has more listeners than any show on 2fm, it beggers belief that Dan Healy didn't sign Up Ray and JP after they left 98fm

Sorry for bumping an old thread but I've just listened to a podcast with Mario Rosentock interviewing Ray and this was addressed, Ray said that he had been trying to get a gig on 2fm all the years he was working on TV, so the Late Bill O'Donavan also missed a golden opportunity to have him, indeed as he left the Den the same summer (1998) that Dempsey left 2fm, he would have been an ideal candidate for the 2fm breakfast show from August 1998.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,691 ✭✭✭ford fiesta

Ray did fill in on some weekend 2FM shows around 1997 / 8

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 18 00s anorak

Yeah he mentioned that but said that the amount of shifts he did there were so few that he'd never call himself a former 2fm presenter. He also said that it was Stewart Carolan who bagged the job at Today Fm for him, not Willie O'Reilly or Tom Hardy
