i just fitted a new cassette and chain and the gears are changing on there own. The chain is the same spec that I got off the giant website and the cassette is the same ratio as the previous one.

Have I made a mess of the chain size?

I'd imagine you just need to re-index the gears using the barrel adjuster at the rear dérailleur. It's a very simple 5 minute job. Have a look on YouTube for 'adjusting rear derailleur' there are plenty of videos showing you how to do it yourself. No tools needed.
