Bringing Hurleys to America

    Hi Guys

I'm heading out to America next Saturday for 4 months and I want to bring 2 hurleys with me. I've been told that you could strap them to the outside of the bag and check it as normal, but I'm not so sure about this. As I intend on getting internal flight while in the states so I'm sure this would pose a problem.

My case in not big enough to fit them in. Could anybody recommend what would be the best thing to do or even if you could recommend a good pretty cheap case/bag they would fit into.

    Cheers in advance :)

The best thing would be to try and get a case for them. It would look a little odd having them strapped to the case.

Who are you flying with? If AL, it might incur and extra charge.

Went over to the States last year, a few of us brought hurls out and back, you can indeed strap them onto the bag for checkout.

You can also put it in the bag, and leave the handle sticking out if it wont fit, as long as its secure. (Went aer-lingus/virgin, got no extra charge)

Yeah this is what I intend on trying and what Aer lingus told me to do when I asked on Twitter.

My concern is that I will also be flying in Internal flights when in the states and it might not go down well with the airlines over there

Internal might be dodge alright..godamit bin laden..I'd say you could still get away with the strap job though if ya chanced it maybe..get onto one of the gaa clubs out there either they'd surely know the full craic

We don't have many hurleys in the States, but we do have plenty of baseball bats, lacrosse sticks, hockey sticks, so the airlines deal with this all the time. My concern would be the baggage handlers throwing it around and not caring if they do any damage or lose it, but as long as they are secure to the bag, I don't think the airline will give you any trouble.

I would contact the airline directly and ask what their policy is for baseball bats if you're really concerned about it.

Half a dozen cable ties and I reckon it should be secure enough..... At least I hope they will be. I cant imagine the baggage handle could miss them 😀

Flying out today. Went to the check in desk and was asked to take them off the case. They got out through oversize baggage. No questions asked. Didn't even have to pay for a second bag... So I'm happy out 😀
