UPC 240Mb CAT 5E speed limitation problem

Using cat5e cable provided Im getting good speeds, however today I had a pc shop make me 2 cat5e cables as I needed longer cables.

Both are only getting about 40 to 43Mb downstream. On the Cisco router the ethernet light is flashing amber instead of the usual green I get when I use the cable provided with router.

Any idea what could be wrong? Two different techs made the cable up, so hard to imagine both did it wrong when they wired them.

Are you testing the two cables on the same PC or different PCs? Orange would suggest to me its connecting at 10/100 Mbps, rather than 1 Gbps.

This could be a limitation of the PC you're connecting to having a slower network card than the one you're trying with the shorter cable.

Both PCs are modern gaming PCs with gigabit ports. Both work with the supplied cat5e cable, both have this problem with the two cables I just bought. Must be an issue with the wiring of the cable or something. No idea though to be honest.

How long is the made up cable? Is the longer cable running past something that might interfer with the signal? ie; electrical wires, fluorescent lighting, motors, and similar items that shed electrical or magnetic interference.

I suppose all you can do is buy a known brand, packaged cable the length you require and see how that works vs the made up one.

Can you get a close up photo each of the rj45s showing the sequence of the stands. Should be like below and the same either end.

    Brown
    Brown+ white
    Green
    Blue+ white
    Blue
    Green+ white
    Orange
    Orange+ white

Go into the adapter settings on the network card.... What speed is it connected at?

With the cat5e provided by UPC the connection is 1.0Gb, with either cable I got made today the connection drops to 100.0Mb.

The cables are cat5e for certain, its stamped all over the sleeve and its from a reputable source.

Here are some photos. I only have a camera phone which isnt the greatest obviously, but hopefully it may shed some light on the situation.

They all look wrong but it's hard to tell when you didn't photo them in the same direction and some with the rj45 the other way up. Any chance you could photo either end of one cable. Brown should on one side, the other side should be Orange and white when you look into the crimp from the face without the clip. Should be solid, stripe, solid, stripe etc and the exact same either end crimp, in fact it doesn't really matter as long as each side is identical

Here is a photo of one end of both cables side by side. Clearly something is wrong as the green and the brown are in alternate pins. Would I get a 100Mbs connection with them in the wrong position? I wouldve imagined I would get no connection at all.

I was being a bit slow and didnt read your request. Here is a photo showing the side without the clip, both ends are from the same cable.

Hard to make out but both look wrong with a Brown+ white on the very outside, should be Brown. Go hit yer man across the head with it and get someone else to crimp it properly.

A network card will auto negotiate.

Doesn't look quite right but it's hard to tell from photos, close up is the order the same on both cables? If you happen to have a multimeter you could buzz out both ends to be sure.

Post above was referring to the first pic. Just noticed second pic.

The browns are reversed on right crimp making it impossible for it to do gigabit

Check this out and compare it to what you have - if they ain't right, get your money back and buy some proper made cables from a reputable supplier. :D

I have a little better understanding of what I am looking at now. Would I be correct in thinking that pin 1 and pin 8 must be ORANGE and BROWN respectively?

I will talk about one cable for the time being.

Both ends are wired in the exact same way.

    ORANGE. ORANGE/WHITE. BLUE. BLUE/WHITE. GREEN. GREEN/WHITE. BROWN. BROWN/WHITE.

So would I be correct in thinking that I would need to change the last two pins and swap the BROWN and the BROWN/WHITE around so that the solid BROWN is in pin 8 position?

    Actually Im talking rubbish. HELP!

Is it possible without the specific tools to take the thing apart and wire it myself again? I really would like to have this working tonight and not have to take the cable I have going outside the house. It took ages getting it through some ventilation ducts, so if I can fix it myself at home without paying for tools all the better.

    Should be

    Orange+ white
    Orange
    Green+ white
    Blue
    Blue+ white
    Green
    Brown+ white
    Brown

You can't open crimps, you need to cut it and redo with a fresh crimp and a crimp tool

I got you. Oh well looks like I will have to go through all of this again tomorrow.

I figured out the correct sequence just after I posted. I cant believe they did it like that, 2 different people made it right in front of me. One did the 12m outdoor cable and the other a 3m indoor one. No wonder it was so cheap at only €6! :D

Hahaha nah I wont do that. They were really nice and if it was done correctly you cant argue with that price, its ridiculously cheap.

I can see the outdoor cables have the BROWN/WHITE on the outside instead of the BROWN. So yes, both cables have the same problem.

I just checked and they are open tomorrow so I will go back and get it fixed and I will take in a print out of the correct order so they can ensure they do it right form now on.

Thanks for all of the help everyone.

Both ends are wired in the exact same way.

As long as the other device isnt sh1t and supports MDIX then this should work perfectly. You sure you werent sold crap cabling?

Possibly, but its unlikely as I would obviously just bring it back. In fact before I had a chance to even specify the spec of cable the guy asked what speed my internet was and when I said 240Mb he said I would need cat5E. I wanted Cat6 but they didnt have any.

Both cables are different, one being outdoor and one indoor.

Are you certain about this MDX thing? I will use one PC as an example, Im using a P8P67PRO mobo using onboard gigabit LAN port and connected directly to the Cisco router UPC supply for 240Mb service.

Genuinely didn't think this would be a layout issue on the cable because you said two different techs made the cables, didn't think both wouldn't know how to do it!

They look wrong. Go back to them with this image:
