Instrument panel goes dark when lights are in use.

Hi, my folks just bought a secondhand Toyota Corolla Terra 2008 saloon 1.4 petrol car. Unfortunately the manual wasn't in the glove-box and they won't get back up to the dealer for another few days.

The issue is that when they turn on the car lights the dash goes dark. I searched for a manual online which said there should have been a dial present to the right of the wheel which simply isn't there.

Just wondering does anyone here know how to make the instrument panel stay lit even when lights are in use. It's lit up fine until the lights go on and my folks would be a lot more comfortable adjusting to driving a new car without worrying about not being able to see the instrument panel.

    Thanks.

On the dashboard, there is a small black stalk to adjust the trip A/B mileage.

On my corolla, this is also used to select the backlight level for the dash....

With the lights on, you need to press and hold it, then a little bar graph appears and you can adjust level up or down....

Thank you. I was fiddling with that earlier but now I know what to look for I'll try it again.

It is a bad design as when one starts the car the whole panel lights up and still confuses people into thinking they have their lights on.

as said above the stalk has a knob and is it possible there is an adjuster on dash itself.

Yep, the Corolla remembers settings for when the lights are on and off, you can set them any way you want. Factory setting is full brightness with lights off then medium when lights are on.

I used to set them at full brightness with lights off, then dimmed all the way down with lights on because as TFB says, it's easy to get caught out with no lights on.
