highlights include the first production Bugatti Veyron, the second-to-last road-going McLaren F1 ever built, and the last Ferrari Enzo — number 400, which was a gift to Pope John Paul II from former Ferrari chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo, there's also a Jaguar XJ220, a Koenigsegg CCXR, the ultra-limited Lamborghini Reventón of which only 20 were made, and a Porsche 959, considered by many Porsche collectors to be a holy grail.

If you want that F1 — which McLaren has upgraded to high-performance LM spec — get ready to shell out at least $12 million.

I remember looking up Porsche 959's not that long ago, maybe 8 years ago, and they were a good bit cheaper than the F40's at the time. The F40's were making around ST£180,000 to ST£220,000 and the 959's were around £80k less than that. Around £100,000 would have gotten a fairly good one. Ferrari 246 Dino's were around £70k. Over the following 5 or 6 years, F40's crept up to £300k, 959's started to close the gap, and then all of a sudden they both jumped to a million quid, only in the last 2 years. Dino's are over 200k now. Should have bought an F40 instead of a house, I'd be well off now!!

I happened to be holidaying in Monterey last year when a similar auction was taking place. It was unbelievable. The transport company were loading the cars into trucks. I was able to walk right up to the cars and then I got to listen to the engines when they were turned on. Ferraris, Aston Martins, Jags... It was class.

959's were going for around €180-220,000 in Germany less than 18 months ago. It's pure speculation, nothing else, the exact same as the UK 20-25 years ago.

There was always 3 or 4, sometimes 6 or 7 for sale on mobile.de or in Singen or somewhere in Ger/NL/Fra area. Now there's rarely one or two, most people who own one are just waiting to see where they go price wise.

Last two that I'm aware of went for €3.4m in 2012 and €5.6m early 2014.

An old chap from Florida called Preston Henn is the favourite.

Made a fortune in retail and spent a decent chunk of it on racing and racing cars.

    He's worth a Google.
