I got added to the herd number this year. But I've noticed my name is as the herd owner and not herd keeper. I know the difference but why is this that my name isn't on both ??
My name isnt on the calf cards either or on the screen in the mart when selling animals very dissappointing :(

There can only be one herd keeper. Why are you disappointed?

Because of this line on the ER1 form.

''In all cases one individual only must be nominated in the role of the “keeper” of the animals and be responsible for the herd/flock.''

I am unsure of the cattle cards but all you need to do for your name to be on the mart board is to inform them. I sell my own cattle under my name, just make sure they're split correctly in the office so the cheque is correct!

Factories and marts can only issue cheques to the person & associated herd number that is on the card. It has something to do with Revenue rules and prevention of money laundering. That is what I was told last year by a factory manager.

This has to do with an incint about 5-6 years back. Back then there was a practice that agents could buy cattle and slaughter in orginal herd owners name. That is they arrive with a load of cattle and some moght be in my herd no but theuy would have bought them directly off me and when slaughtered they would get the cheque made out to them.

However 5-6 years afo during the crash an incident happened where an agent collected a cheque for over 20 cattle made out to him that he did now own and absconded with it. When the farmer rang about his cattle and cheque he was informed that the agent had claimed the cattle were his. Factory tried to leave the onus on the farmer to collect the cheque however they had to pony up a second time when he handed it over to his solicitor.

It was common practice as well that if a farmer young fella had a bullock or two the cheque could be made out to him rather than the farmer and cause a tax libility for father however my understanding all cheques are made out now to herd owner name.
