A call for stolen vehicle data to be released

CompleteCar.ie is today calling on the Irish Government to provide protection for the consumer when it comes to buying stolen cars. Currently, An Garda Siochana will not authorise release of stolen vehicle registrations to vehicle history companies, making it virtually impossible to tell if a second hand purchase has been stolen or recovered.

Just asking since you didn't give your own opinion - how will it matter to you if a car you're looking at was previously stolen and recovered? If car was crashed it will show up on the car's history.

The Op said stolen or recoved, big difference between this and stolen and recovered. IMHO recovered isn't important, although I once sold a car that the Gardai kindly returned to me and where the culprit had been kind enough to respray it.

If I was buying a car and knew there was a good chance it was used joy riding I would be put off(I know this could happen even without the theft)
And the crash would only show if reported

Recovered is irrelevant, a stolen car that has been bought on false plates or whatever can be siezed by the cops and returned to its rightful owner leaving you out of pocket.

How can it not matter? I see a car I like online, do a history check and it comes back as fine. Then do a stolen check and it comes back as being stolen, I don't know about you but I'd be put off the car and also advising the police.

Then you do a stolen check and it still comes back as fine, since the Gards don't release the data to a "Stolen Check" website.
So you buy the car and then the Gards will take it away and you're out of pocket.
I wonder who the Gards are protecting? It can only be to benefit the thieves.

Hmm, I may have misread the OP. I read it as a car that was stolen and recovered and then sold by rightful owner.

Seems a shade mental that you can't walk into a Garda station or the Tax Office (or online) and bang in the VIN number. Literally just has to say Yay or Nay as regards if its currently stolen. I don't see any major data protection implications there.

Just be very careful when leaving your car even outside in your drive and have good security on the house itself.

Caught two fine lads;) scoping out my area and house yesterday.

Have a nice picture of the lad trying to look like he works for chadwicks with a lovely reflective jumper and staff on the back of it.

Make it as difficult as possible for them.

It is a joke of a system here with data protection laws and the gardai holding onto such info that could cut crime.
