Dress Alterations when living abroad

    Hiya,

I'm getting married on the 8th August in in my hometown in Ireland. I have the dress and it's at my parents house but I'm living in London. I'm just wondering how other brides sorted getting alterations done? I don't need too much done to it (says she who has no idea about these things!:o), it needs cap sleeves added and the train taken up a bit and maybe taken in (a teeny tiny bit)

I'm flying home on the 20th June but then won't be back until the 31st July. Is the 20th June too early to go for a fitting? I've lost some weight for the wedding but don't think I'm likely to lose much more between now and the wedding...

Also if anyone has any recommendations that would be great! I'll be in Tipperary but more than happy to travel.

Unless there are major alterations you'll get in done in a few days max. Maybe have it booked in somewhere for the day you fly home before the wedding and tell them it's a rush order. If it's just regular changes you should have it back in plenty of time for the 8th.

I thought I wrote this thread for a minute! Only I live further than London and won't be home in June :D

Anyway, I've booked in with a dressmaker in Cork for about 10 days before the wedding, to be collected 2 days beforehand. I sent her a description and picture of the dress, and it needs to be taken up, bustled and possibly have minor alterations on the waist. She was perfectly confident that it can be done in time.

If you'd like more time for alterations, go in on the 20th of June for sure, then get the final alterations done the week before the wedding.

Thanks Faith and annoyedgal. That puts my mind at ease a bit that I'm not leaving it all last minute!!

Faith, is your dressmaker in Cork City? Would you mind PM'ing me her details?:)

Hi,if you're still looking for a seamstress around Tipp, the lady I used was in Piltown and she was brilliant and lots of fun too. Her name is Deirdre and trades under Supreme Seams, you can find her on facebook. She is a Trojan worker and so talented. She is connected to My Dress in Carrick on Suir. Exceptionally reasonable too.

Wow,I sound like her PR agent but I was delighted with her.

    That would be great, thanks!

Just another quick question, a woman that I was talking to about getting dress alterations done said that I'd need to get the material for the sleeves myself for her to use. Is that normal?

I actually couldn't tell you, but I'd say with Deirdre if she was cutting some of the material from the length and could use that for the sleeves I'd say she would.
I'll PM you her number, I'd contact her sooner rather than later as she could be very busy. My wedding was last August and she was very busy with alterations for weddings and debs.
