some insurance policys cover this check if yours does
was there any diesel in her when you filled it
how long did it take you to get home
dont try to start it the whole system needs draining and if you are the praying type it wont hurt

if the policy covers you ring them and ask what to de otherwise ring your mechanic if it ran all the way home maybe you just cleaned her out :)

Call mechanic, get it all drained and bled out. Fill tank with diesel and dipetane. Fit new fuel filter full of diesel. Cross you fingers.

Was it empty when you put the 40 in?

I've done this before- twice! Don't worry, it happens. Because u had some diesel in it before u topped up with the petrol u should be ok. Don't start it again until u get it drained. Can u get somebody to come to the house to do that? Once drained keep filling it to the top with diesel- for a week or two!

    Hi

A family member put 40 euro of petrol in my 2010 diesel golf about two year ago. Drove for about 5 miles before realising the mistake. We got a mechanic out to drain, flush and refill it. As far as I can remember the cost was about 200 euro at the time. I have had no issues since and the car drives as well as ever. My car insurance did not provide any cover for this.

The diesel in the fuel filter and the lines from the tank would probably have got you most of the way home - so hopefully very little petrol reached the engine.

Just wondering how you got on today? Thought of you're dilemma whilst filling my own car up this afternoon!

You usually have around 80-100 km left when the light comes on so it should be fine, just get it drained.

Thanks all got it drained last night and filled it this morning drove 200km this evn without any problems an expensive mistake but could have been a lot worse. Have to say this is a great site for finding out info and support dont know what I would have done otherwise
