You don't, usually you use the driving instructors car.

I think just as long as your insured to drive it, amd have the owners permission. I drove my instructers car for mine.

No, you don't have to own your own car to do your test. If you don't own a car, you can do the test in your instructors car, or you can do it in a car belonging to a friend or family member, as long as you are insured to drive it.

I wonder how many people do the test without insurance as the tester will only check the disc on the window?

They can ask for the insurance company details if they see anything they suspect. In fact its up to you the driver to prove you have insurance. It would be a crappy thing to do but they could refuse to get in the car if anything is out of place or normal.

Not AFIK. I did mine years ago in a driving instructors car as my own had developed an intermittent spedometer fault which the was proving difficult for the garage to track down and fix.

Until I was sure it was fixed I didn't want to risk the fault appearing during the test causing the test to be abandoned. I did two or three lessons in a driving school car to make sure I wouldn't end up turning on the wipers, instead of indicators :-) and sat the test in the driving instructors car.
