Just bought a new van . It was brand new, paid full price, and when I picked up only 17km on clock. So satisfied it was new.
However, although I bought the van from a dealer in Waterford, and I live in Cork , it came with a Dublin reg. Not bothered by that just think its a bit odd.
The reg book came today and states there is 1 previous owner.
Is this normal ( assuming the garage previously registered it to themselves?) or is it a mistake by the tax office or D of T in Shannon?

Regd in the garage name probably. I'd give it back or look for a few grand back. When you go to sell it will have 2 careful owners otherwise.

I actually bought it over the phone without seeing it, waited for finance approval then went to Waterford to pick it up.

You should have checked initially. I don't think the dealer did anything wrong if you didn't ask first. I got the impression that you bought the car having checked out the basics first.

Really? At no stage was I told I would be buying what was in effect a secondhand vehicle (as regards resale value). Will be ringing them first thing tomorrow.

It was registered by the dealer to keep numbers up for that half of year.

Obviously it is new and that would not bother me at all as it only had delivery mileage on it.

    D reg is the best:P

True, but no way would I be paying list price for a pre-reg. Dealer will get a decent bonus for hitting target so they can cough up some of it.

Should be demo model price , maybe ring the supplying distributor to make a complaint , about this dealer franchise or maybe consumer affairs, very underhand sharp practice .

    ring the dealer first
if you were "sold" new you are entitled to new

If it has another owner on the book regardless of whether the garage registered it to sit on the forecourt or it was used as a demo model it will be devalued as a result of another owner. If you were buying a new van I would seek a full refund as this is not what you got, perhaps free servicing over x years might suit you better though. If you were simply buying a 151 Van you got what you payed for.

I'd imagine OP drove all the way from Cork because he was getting the best deal on the van. The best deal was probably do-able due to the fact the vehicle was a pre-reg/demo vehicle. 17klms on the clock so what? It will make ZERO difference trading the van in with 160,000klms on the clock in 5 years time! Every single franchise it at it these days, it would be different if there was more than one owner in that space of time. The paperwork will show that the vehicle was registered on whatever date and will also show the mileage when it was picked up. Much a do about nothing really, however in fairness if OP was told it was Brand New as opposed to 'Practically' brand new. There is a difference of course but the Reg no. should have been a dead giveaway !

Did you see the van online first by any chance? If it was registered and put online with the advert showing 1 previous owner there's not much you can say.

If not just call the dealership and explain all of this to them. I wouldn't go complaining to the brand or trading standards just yet like somebody else suggested.

Ring the dealer, they should be able to sort it out. Usually in these situations they can ensure that the first "owner" doesn't show on the VLC.

Pre reg cars are slightly different, they will show an owner before the first retail owner buys it.

Call the dealer and see what they say.
