I am to attend a day course in St James Hospital next week and wondering where i could park my car for the day. Exact location:
The William Stokes Postgraduate Centre, St James’s Hospital, Dublin 8

Is it very expensive to park within the hospital for the day? Any idea? Or any nearby parking places?

    Thanks

    Redcow park and ride 4euros
Adult return from redcow park and ride 4euros

There's free parking in Basin view just outside the hospital. I'd pay a bit for a bit more security though.

Do Red Cow park and ride. Staff parking is full before 8am and there are always queues for the public carpark. I wouldn't park on Basin View, numerous cars have been vandalised there. The entire area around James' has a reputation, be it justified or not, but the Basin View side is the dodgiest.

If its a 1 day course I'd do Park & Ride from the Red Cow for sanity reasons.

Just saw the hospital car park rate, which is 15 euros for 24 hours.

and Luas gonna cost 8 euros for 2 persons, is that correct?

Time wise, would I save more time if I just park straight at hospital? Or Luas is faster way?

    Many thanks everyone!!

Just park at the hospital.particularly if you're having a procedure done. Do you really want the hassle of the luas? Easier to step into your car.

I don't have any procedure, i attending a teaching course there from 9 AM to 4 PM.
But yea i think better to park at hospital as i am unaware of Dublin area. :o

It's not relevant to the OP, but most people having a procedure done aren't allowed to drive or 24 hours (or more) afterwards.

If you're employed by the HSE you could park in the Dr Steeven's Hospital car park without charge (entrance on St John's Rd West opposite Heuston). Bring your HSE ID (& to be on the safe side whatever correspondence you have from William Stokes Postgraduate Centre/St James's), show your ID to attendant on way in & tell him you're in Dublin on HSE business & he should grant you access to park for the day.

You could then either get a LUAS from Heuston to James's (one stop) or walk up Steeven's Lane (just follow the LUAS track) to James's (max 10 mins walk). The William Stokes Centre is the red brick building opposite the James's LUAS stop, which is practically just inside the James's St hospital entrance.

Yes I am a doctor employed by HSE.

When did you try this? I heard now car parks charge everyone. But if you tried it recently and it worked then I am happy to give it a try.
    many thanks

You'll be grand using the parking in James before 9am. There won't be any queues at that time.

Even in St James's could I park for free? After showing my HSE ID card?

Sorry I meant the paid parking. Can you not claim it back on expenses if it's a work day?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,051 ✭✭✭masterboy123

No, actually this is an optional course, for my own learning. Although the course will be free, but HSE wont cover travel/parking expenses.

Something that you will need to bear in mind is that there is no regular vehicular access allowed into to Hospital via the Rialto entrance. Now they allow access to hospital staff but I don't know if extends to visiting staff though I'm sure you can find out. Traffic in and around James Street, Kilmainham, Inchicore and Rialto can be manic at this hour; again bear this in mind.

For ease I'd get the Luas in from Cheeverstown if I were you. It's as good as door to door and it cuts out the worst part of your trip up.

Dr Steeven's is now an administration building used by admin staff & for people attending various types of HSE/DOH/Union meetings & talks, so the car park is manned by an attendant. I don't even know whether there is a facility for paid parking as it's not open to the public. I used it as recently as about three weeks ago & have done so quite regularly for quite a number of years.

    I will park there then.

    Got it now, thanks :)
Just one last question, were you attending business in Dr. Steeven's hospital itself?
Wondering if I tell attendant that I am to attend HSE course in St James, he may say park there.

Not on all occasions, I just say HSE business, there's no real need for you to mention St James's unless you're pushed but I doubt if you would be - I'd say your HSE ID will be enough. You wouldn't be doing anything wrong - you are a HSE employee after all.

I have re-opened toys post as last week the attended working at Dr. Steevins denied my entry to park my car. I showed him my HSE ID but he said he would let me go in only if i am meeting someone inside Dr. Steevins building.

So issue is i need to attend another course at St. James's hosp and where can i find a cheap car park?
I see GAA club ( Davitt Rd, Goldenbridge, Dublin 12) charges max €3 for a day but i am not sure if it will be open on 16 Feb.
Any nearby car parks? If not i would have to pay at hospital car park only :(

I can't speak for staff parking as that is something you need to contact HR or your HSE guys. What I can tell you is that local parking is not great. Most of it is paid parking; what's free and close by is taken fairly early in the day. Not sure about what they do at Good Counsel GAA but there is no harm in ringing them and asking. Heuston Station is another option.

    I work beside the hospital
parking is a nightmare around here. not sure what it is like inside the hospital though.
I wouldn't park anywhere near basin street as previously mentioned.
you could pay and display up around Kilmainham cop shop though. (there are a few free spots up there also) generally a bit of space up there and pretty safe. would take about 10-15 mins to walk to the hospital/ Also parking on Bow lane, not far away at all, and generally always a few spots available.
also depends where you are coming from, but you could park in the phoenix park (loads do) and walk down.

if you are coming in from this general direction it could actually be quicker to park here and walk down, than driving all the way in or choosing the Kilmainham lane option

On the website it doesn't exactly pinpoint the parking lot. I have attached Google Street View link, pls have a look. Is the parking adjacent to luas line?

Use the Cheeverstown Luas park and ride and save yourself driving in Dublin.

This is going back a bit but I used to have a friend live up that Ceannt Fort road. Nice little collection of streets, quite tight for maneuverability but never had an issue finding a space. I used to just park up there when I had to attend meetings in the area.

Drive down the Quays, turn left on to Liffey Street West, go through the archway into the museum grounds and turn left for the car park.

Drive to Luas Red Cow either and you'd be a bit quicker and avoid some of the Tallaght Luas stops.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,055 ✭✭✭Emme

I'd advise the OP to use the Luas park and ride. Red Cow would be the best. St James's is chaos at the moment with building sites all over the place. Half the staff car park is out of use because they're building the new Children's Hospital. They should have built it at Connolly Hospital but that's another story.

Anyway, don't go anywhere near SJH with a car unless you want to pay full whack at the visitors' car park.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,051 ✭✭✭masterboy123

    I appreciate your suggestion.

I will park at Collins Barracks which is nearby and would cost less than luas option. Red cow park will cost me 4 euros plus luas ticket both ways.
