Megane Card Slot Tampered With?

Quick story: Renault Megane 2003 - Clutch went on it a few days back resulting in it being laid up outside the house in an estate unlocked. Checked it today and the drivers window was down 3 inches (no probs thought I left it that way), sat into it to put the key card in the slot and it wouldnt go in smoothly cause the previously perfect slot seems to have been tampered with. I can get the card in but have to force it and it does get recognised. Anyone have any insight into this? Is this a thing burglars do to steal cars with the card slot? If they were, they would have discovered the car to have no operational clutch and also the battery far too dead to ignite the car to start the engine.
    Thoughts?
