    Hi,
I am very new to insulation/air tightness and the rest so please ignore my ignorance. I have been told that if the insulation is compressed in the attic and the attic is boarded out for storage space that you lose the full benefit of the insulation, is this true? On another note we were going to put 300mm of insulation in the roof space but I have been told to put 500mm if I can afford it, does it get to a point that where the more insulation you add the minimal benefit, i.e what would the optimum insulation in the roof space. All info is greatly appreciated
    Thanks
    Brendan

A novice myself but I can add what I know. Compressing insulation makes it less effective. Its comes compressed and you have to fluff it up when u install it.

As far as I know 300mm is the recommended thickness, I'm not sure how much of a lower U value you would achieve with another 200mm. I think for the cost it mightn't be worth the expense but could be wrong. Saying that I'd put the 500mm down if money wasnt an issue.

Make sure you run the layers perpendicular to each other to reduce thermal bridging as well.
