Changing from 3 series

    Hi there

I'm looking for advice on changing my 318d.
Its a fab car and in 2 years driving it I have had trouble free motoring. It has been regularly serviced and I have looked after it.
It was a UK import and registered in 2009. Fab car and nothing wrong with it at all except it will need the timing belt changed soon and from what I've heard this can be an expensive job on the N47 engines.

I'm looking at changing to a car with lower mileage. I currently drive 100 miles a day to work and back and need a car that can handle that mileage with ease. So I think a 2.0 diesel engine or higher is my only option.
I'm very tempted to upgrade to a newer 3 series but I'm being quoted ridiculous money of 13k to come up 2 years. I could come up to a 1 series for 8k.
I'm also looking at a 2.0 litre Qashquai or Golf.

    Any suggestions welcome

Would ya not keep the 3 Series if it's going well for you with no problems? Also, these engines have a chain not a belt. I know the 20D engines have chain problems but I don't think the 18D do even thought they're the same engine.

Apologies I should have said Timing chain...

I spoke with my mechanic who has carried out the regular services on the car and he has recommended I change.
As I have had trouble free motoring for so long, he maintains that things will start to go wrong with it.
A timing chain replacement is looking at the best part of 1500 and i would rather 'invest' that in an upgrade. I use the word 'invest' lightly as I know how cars depreciate

BMW are replacing the timing chains free of charge based on certain criteria. You should bring the car to a BMW dealer to be checked if the timing chain first needs replacing and secondly if BMW will cover the costs. As it stands now if the chain needs replacing then it's value is going to be obviously devalue the current value of the car.

Look I get the urge to change, I have it now too, after 3 years of the same car, but 13,000 to come up to years to another 3 series, plus the interest if applicable! its bloody insane! Keep the car, better the devil you know, or angel in your case.

The quickest lesson I learned when I bought my first car a bmw 318ci at around 20, to hell with the motor tax and diesel petrol debate, depreciation and loan interest are the real killers...

yeah it will, like the newer 3 series you are looking at and every other car for that matter...
