First road bike - budget approx €1200

    Hi everyone,

my beloved hybrid is nearing the end of it's life. After 9 years faithful service I can't really complain but I will be sad to see it go. But every cloud and all that. So I've decided to save up a few quid and buy my first road bike. And I'm looking for advice.

My budget is around €1200 and I plan on using the bike to work scheme so I'm looking to buy from a shop in Dublin. Primarily I will be using this bike for commuting to work but I hope to take it on longer spins on the weekend and maybe enter a sportive later in the year. So being able to put a pannier rack on is essential for me.

Any suggestions on models of bike or shops to use? I bought my current bike in Cycle Ways and they were very good but I'm interested to hear about other shops. I'm in Dublin 12. I'd like a 'proper' road bike but maybe a cyclocross would be a better option?

    Cheers.

You should shop online. I got my bike in B2W from wiggle back in 2008. I'm not sure but you probably still can avail b2w if you buy within EU (or not - maybe someone will confirm this).

Going with well known brand will be probably most expensive way and you'll get least value for money. So you should shop around for best value and see how far €1200 will get you. Some big online shops have their own range of bikes which might not have a well known logo on the frame but then you get nice parts. Also worth looking at sale models too and this website has sometimes nice bikes at good price.
