    Hi,
I'm a parent and teacher in the Gaeltacht. We have a problem with the amount of English being spoken by the children, together, socially, in the school.
We would like to know what works in Gaelscoils that we're not doing here in our school.
I would love to great from parents but also especially from any teachers with experience in both systems.

Do you use total immersion from day 1? Are there positive strategies to encourage the children to use Irish asap such as "Gaeilgeóir an Lae?"
Do you explicitly teach the language they will need for the yard and simple social interactions? Most importantly,a re the parents on board? There are a number of families in most Gaeltacht region who do not have Irish at all and these children will need extra support in the early years.

Are there sanctions in place for the children who blatantly and repeatedly disregard the rules around Irish use (not the infants obviously?)

Thanks for that. There's not much implementation. Yes, there's immersion in that most children have Irish at home, even if the parents are not speaking it to them. (It's complicated:)
There are no prizes, just a presumption they'll speak Irish.
Your point about teaching school yard vocabulary is a great one as no, that wouldn't be done.
There are lots of supports for English speakers coming in. None for the native speakers though!
No, Most parents may not be on board /don't care either way.
    No sanctions for speaking English.
