Ricky Gervais (not a big fan of half the shyte he comes out with on twitter but nevertheless) did a great film on this sort of subject actually, "The Invention of Lying" I think it was called, where he had all the people looking up to him for the answers to all of lifes questions in a world where nobody could lie, until one day he did, and the whole film is based around the premise of giving people hope.

So, if I found a book with all the answers to life's questions, and I was only allowed reveal the answers to three, I'd let someone else ask the questions and then if I thought revealing the answers to them would give them hope, I'd tell them the answers, and if I thought the answer would hurt them, well, I'd probably just tell them that page in the book is missing
