Car for 6 months

Hi. I am a freelance IT contractor and will be coming to Ireland for 6 months. I will be based in the south East and have been told that a car is necessary to enjoy my time there.

I was thinking of buying something for 6months and then selling it before I leave.

I'd like to go for a cheap cabriolet, something like a tigra or focus. I've seen them on done deal for 6 to 9k for a 2009 vehicle.

Does it make sense to go down this route? How much value am I expected to lose in 6months?

Cabriolet are seasonal. In 6 months time it's December.

It tends to rain a bit in Ireland too.

I would spend as little as possible if I were in your position.

That's a good point. Any suggestions on a fun car which will hold value?

They're pretty dull, but a 1.0 Yaris would be sold within the day when you come to move on. If you pick an old good one (for around €2000) you'll make most if not all your money back.
    That's looking at it sensibly.

you need to factor in stuff like insurance.

I don't mind losing out on around 1k on the value in the car. You are right about what you wrote I'm sure but I'm happy to pay the price for a bit of fun while enjoying the Irish country. I plan on driving a fair bit during weekends.

Agreed. You're only here for 6 months, and you don't really want to be selling your car for too long when you gotta go.

    /edit
By this I mean that if you plan on buying a nice car, check carzone for similar and for how long they have been on sale for, as you may have to lose a few thousand just to get rid of it quickly (last few weeks of working).

Thanks for the advice. I'll have a look on carzone as suggested.

The point that cabrios are highly seasonal is also very valid. I guess this is the time when everyone wants to buy one, and when I get to sell it is when nobody wants one.
