Hi folks. Looking for a little advise. I have a Lapierre hybrid and want to change the gear shift/break controls. The existing units are Shimano ST-EF 50 8x3. The breaks are Shimano double pivot.

My problem is, looking on line I am finding it difficult to find the exact replacement. So l have two questions, 1: Can any 8/3 shifter work on any 8/3 step derailure? and 2: Any of the replacements I have found say they are for V breaks, will they work with double pivot breaks?

I should add the replacements I am looking at are Shimano as are the existing derailures and brakes that are on the bike.

Any help would be much appreciated.

    Many thanks.

MTB/Hybrid controls are outside my knowledge base, but road bike controls have different pull ratios for each manufacturer, ie 10mm movement on the brake lever might translate to 5mm at the brake calliper. So I would stick to Shimano unless you are changing items at both ends of the cable.

The controls I was looking at are Shimano as are the callipers and derailures that are on the bike. What I was really asking was are they interchangeable within the brand.

    Thanks for the info.

Vee-brake levers don't work with caliper brakes as the leverage is different. You need 'short pull' levers or 'BMX' levers (or road levers if you have dropped handlebars).

Your best bet is to get separate brake levers and shifters, rather than integrated. I think any Shimano 8 speed shifter will be ok.

    Edit: maybe these
