How do you remove ceramic ceiling medallions

Hi all. Looking at some oddly placed ceiling medallions in the house. They're some sort of plaster or ceramic material. Ceilings are plaster. Is there any way to cleanly remove them without using a hammer & chisel? I want to minimize the repair necessary after they're removed. They don't fit the house at all, not sure why…
