Switching from Eirecom to UPC

So we have been using Eirecom for a couple of years now. However we would love to change to UPC now. However before we change I would like to clear up a few things first. :)

Do we have to cancel our contract with Eirecom or will UPC do this for us? I read something about a 30 day notice to Eirecom.

How long will this process take? How long will we not have broadband and phone?

    Thanks in advance ;)

Both of them use separate networks so if you want to make sure you don't have any down time I would wait until upc is installed before you cancel eircom. Ordering with upc won't cancel the eircom account.

    Order UPC.
    Wait for install.
Ask UPC to port out your old eircom number.
When this happens it'll nuke your eircom account.

But surely it won't negate the requirement to give Eircom 30 days notice of termination? (Providing the op is not in a longer contract)

That's gone. Consumer protection authority(?) deemed it illegal and eircom had to refund the charges.

I wonder does this finding refer to the additional penalties being imposed by Eircom? Otherwise surely no company would be able to require 30 days notice?

This page would appear to be in response to the finding above:
10.Eircom will prominently publish full details of its requirements for changing
    service provider on its website.

You are obliged under the terms of your contract with eircom to provide 30 days' notice of your intention to switch service provider.

Customers who switch service provider without giving eircom 30 days' notice of their intention to switch will not be charged a penalty fee.

    Clear as mud!

I have written to Comreg and asked them for clarification. I expect though that the requirement for a month's notice will be regarded as an integral part of the Terms and Conditions and not seen as a penalty.
