One week after the referendum and I am still feeling such a sense of pride that we have equality and that we all voted it in by such a landslide.
Just the right thing to do.

    It's an incredible feeling.

Anyone else still got this great feeling?

Ps. It does irk me hearing talk about respecting the 38% who voted no though... Back in the 90's when Divorce was passed I don't recall any calls to respect the 49% who voted no??

There are no prizes for second place in referenda or any political votes. Frankly I think it's bullsh1t that we have to pander to these No people who have been outvoted fairly and squarely and democratically. You LOST, respect the majority and move on!

I proposed to my boyfriend, when the intention was on dumping him. Damn the referendum, damn the drink, it's just pure awkward now.

    I have the same indifference.

But I'm looking forward to the 2 week anniversary thread.

Well - there's always going to be people opposing stuff. So there were so many per cent 'no' voters. It really doesn't matter how many. They lost. There's no more to be said of their arguments because as a democracy the country have voted 'yes'.

I'm very proud of this country for supporting equality. But I got to admit that it's last week's news now.

Gays being allowed to get married != equality.
Ireland is still poor in terms of disability equality, paternal equality rights, travellers, immigrants, and so on.

Especially because you're not gay and he wasn't your boyfriend, but a random guy on the street and were surprised when he actually said yes.

It's old news to some. It will never be old to those of us who lived in the old Ireland. Every day since for me is an extraordinary rush of emotions. There is turmoil and a searching to refit the pieces of my life into a new pattern. I'm in my late 50's and the feelings I had when I was 17 and 18 are suddenly as real as they were. But now because the end last Saturday was yes I have a real sense of journey's end. Not so much a smile as a deep thoughtful peace.

Aw man, it's people like your good self that this has really given me the happies about. :)
Seeing footage of an older gay man crying he was so overwhelmed with emotion... got me good. :o

Coming to terms with being homosexual in Ireland, or indeed many western countries but Ireland was particularly hostile to it, as a teenager in the early '70s must have been quite painful. I read some very sad stories of that nature coming up to the referendum.

One older man said it was too late for him now, but he was delighted for younger people. I don't know why it would be too late though? Shur you can get married at any age.

Must be an awful feeling for those in Roscommon/South Leitrim to know that a majority of their peers doesn't support them.

Still would make ye proud giving how much of a landslide it was.

It wasn't that much of a margin though. Is it maybe that there is more of an older age group in the region, with a lot of the younger crowd no longer being based there?

I don't know anyone from Roscommon but I know a few from Leitrim and they're all pensioners so you might just be onto something there!

I was immensely proud of Ireland after last week's victory for common decency and respect for our fellow citizens.

Fast forward to this weekend where we have a billionaire tax exile trying to silence our democratically elected parliament and a government burying its head in the sand?

    Sickened.

I think Roscommon is the county that has the oldest average population and the kids leave as soon as possible. Surprising it was so close if anything.

People are completely entitled to an opinion and at least they voted unlike so many others who did not.

Well for me it does anyway.

Equality? No way. I want to marry 2 consenting people. We are all over 18 and are all willing parties. We cant marry. Wheres the equality there?

Equality exists for those who shout the loudest

Start shouting then. If and when society becomes accepting of your wish, you may get your referendum or legislation.

But don't bother going down the 'I CANT MARRY 3 OTHER PEOPLE AND I CANT MARRY MY DOG AND I CAN'T MARRY MY HOUSEPLANT SO IT'S NOT EQUALITY!!!!!' route, because it's already pointed out that just because someone else still doesn't have equality, doesn't invalidate the equality recently granted to a section of society that sought it.

You cant put conditions on equality. It is or is not.
What are your thoughts on it? Should I be allowed marry the 2 loves of my life?

When did that happen? Are the headcases still equating homosexuality with paedophilia and saying sex education will now have to be about anal sex?

Yeah but whilst people were celebrating how Ireland was so great by getting rid of inequality, we were at the same time counting the unprecedented number of No votes in the referendum to somewhat remove ageism against becoming president.
    Selective equality!!!

    1.25% FG the equality party.
