Neighbour is having kitchen redone so kitchen folk told her that she needed to organise a RGII registered fitter to "do" the gas.

She teed someone up and the kitchen install started this am early, before she knew it they had disconnected the gas hob, they turned off both the inline valve beside the hob and the meter.

She rang her RGII guy and when he learned that the hob had been disconnected he refused to come because he couldn't stand over the disconnection work.

He also said he would report the kitchen folk and he told the neighbour to tell them that they would be going to jail for up to two years.

Is he within the regs to refuse to come.

    Thanks

Refusal is nothing to do with regs and its a 3 year prison sentence.

As a gas engineer I am liable for every aspect of a gas installation and face prosecution in the event of anything going pear shaped, I am very uncomfortable with another RGI working on a job I'm putting my name to let alone a kitchen fitter, I would be very reluctant to go near a job like this.

Under law the only person allowed to touch a gas connection or any internal part of a gas boiler is a Rgi
The correct thing here was for the Rgi disconnect the hob isolate and leave safe do any alteration to pipework that was required if any and then come back to reconnect supply to appliance.

It's not uncommon for kitchen fitters to disconnect appliances gas, water, or electrical does that mean its right unfortunately it doesn't

So if you are so inclined re your registered colleagues do you only do new work from the meter and not work on existing because what you are saying is that the last man/women in carries the can for all previous work.

Anyway he was true to his word as the meter got disconnected this evening so she has no gas, no kitchen and 3 kids under 6 and no prospect of anything being done before Tuesday.

It seems he contacted a gas inspector.

As I pen this the other half is feeding the older kids.

When you certify you stating that the installation complies with regs. You can cert only your work be that a hob installation a boiler service etc
You don't have to cert the complete installation.
Personally I believe getting the meter shut down was a bit excessive
To get the meter back on a notification of hazard should have been left and a warning label from bord gais any Rgi can make the installation safe and turn back on gas by doing that he's taking responsibility for all

I think the first your friend needs to do is to find a new rgi ;)

I am not complacent about gas safety and would always look at all aspects of a job. In the event of a explosion or death I don't get to choose the level of responsibility I must take for my actions the Court/Coroner does and being the last man there even if the issue is not with the work I did or certified puts me in a very vunrable position, with this in mind I am less likely to be involved with a job where messers have been before me as I don't trust their actions.

The kitchen fitters actions were illegal and the fault is theirs. Like Robbie I don't think I'd leave a family without but it's a situation that didn't need to happen if they had just left well alone.
