Omitting a job from CV v's possibility of a bad reference

Hoping for a little advice, I'm just putting together my CV at the moment and I have a bit of a sticky situation that I'm trying to handle, I was made redundant in August'12 and took a new job in January '13, the new job didn't work out well and I was bullied terribly by my manager to the point that I was in counselling and on medication for depression, the whole experience was so negative for me, to the point where I was having panic attacks every morning going to work, walking in to town with tears streaming down my face at the thought of staying. I stayed in the job until November 2013 until I luckily found the job I'm currently in, I gave my notice and the bullying got worse, my doctor advised me to present a sick note for the remainder of my notice and my counsellor supported the decision so I did.

I don't regret that as I had to do it for my mental health but now it presents an issue on my CV, do I leave this job for 10 months on and face questioning on why I was there such a short period of time and potentially risk a bad reference if they contact them, or do I leave the job off my cv altogether and say that I was made redundant in August '12 and started my current job in November '13.

    Any advice appreciated

I'd leave it off - and have a story about what I did in the meantime (caring for a sick family member springs to mind!)

    Made Redundant in Aug 12
    Jobseeking Aug 12 - Nov 13
Current job Nov 13 - present

That doesn't look too bad to me. You're in your current job a year and half now so being "unemployed" for the year and a bit before you started your current job won't really matter. I don't think you even need a story as being unemployed during a recession isn't that strange a thing.

If the experience you got in the company was relevant, I'd leave it in. It is unlikely a new company will contact the old company unless you list them as a reference - and anyway, nowadays references are pretty just "she worked here from X to X, doing Y". They rarely do the whole "she was a great employee" thing anymore.

Point is, they won't contact them unless they are on your references list.

They will ask, however, why you left. It is perfectly acceptable to say that it didn't work out / it wasn't the challenge you were looking for / you had an opportunity to move into your current role so you did / you felt you'd achieved as much as you could in the role, etc. Put a positive spin on it.

Try to have no negative points in this process. Everything is positive. I'd keep the job in the CV, as it means you are giving them one less reason to put your CV aside. And you don't need to go into what happened with this manager, it's not relevant to a new company, it's none of their business, the only thing they need to know is that you worked there, you did X, and you left because you wanted to leave.
