I rip dvds on to my laptop and watch them on my tv by connecting using an hdmi/vga cable (macbook) I would like to wirelessly connect the macbook to the television and stream the movie that way. Is it possible? Would chrome cast work for me?

MY tv is a regular led tv, but I am thinking about purchasing a smart tv, and would do if it would be able to wirelessly stream. Thanks in advance for the help.

Yeah Chromecast should allow you to do this. You won't need a smart tv however your TV will need a HDMI connection. You will also need to download an additional app from the play. Something like bubbleupnp should do the trick.
