Will an Italian tune up and a drop of Dipetane get me through the NCT retest?

Car failed NCT on emissions - high idle CO 0.39%

Everything else all good! I've attached a snap of the results.

Just need to get the car through, any chance a long drive with high revs and some Dipetane might do the trick?

Is it worth a try for €38 (Dipetane and retest)?

    Possibly.

    Make/model/year/engine?

Definitely worth a try anyway. I'd spend the €38 and consider it as a bet with fifty fifty odds. Easier to justify then. ☺

Did you just drive straight to the test center? I would give the car a good drive before hand.

That's the idea of an Italian tune-up. Drive it in a "spirited" fashion prior to dropping it in. Have the engine nice and hot burning fuel efficiently as possible and emissions should be optimised.

Did he do that though was my question? I'm guessing he did not going by the readings.

Nope she didn't! I drove straight to the NCT centre, through Waterford City for approx 10mins at max 60km/hr....

So I'm guessing you're all suggesting a good auld drive and try again?

No harm adding the Dipetane, has anyone had better results with Wynns clean burn?

Definately, a high reving run for 15-20 mins at least with a cleaner additive should work.

What's the service history like? A thorough service would be better for it if it's needed.

Fully serviced on the 13th of May. Does the type/amount of driving affect soot build up? In recent months the poor car only gets to do city driving, usually just ten mins in the morning and ten back in the evening.

A good blast up and down the Waterford bypass should sort it. Put the snake oil in if you wish but I think a good lash will do it.

Ya think? Ok, will do. I shall add the Snake Oil and run it through for the week (just incase it has some magic properties).

I presume from the way yer all talking the number is not alarming?

No. Not with the type of driving the car gets.

Get some Dipetane, go on a long drive at a higher speed (motorway preferably) and good luck next time.

Thanks, and will do! Off to Cork next Saturday, nice long stretch so would it be good to book it in for the Sunday morning (after a morning drive of course) Is the week enough to run the Dipetane through?

Also anyone know how to use Dipetane, I know I add it to the petrol but how much do I put in... lets say half a tank? (20litres -ish)

There are litre markings on the side of the bottle. I add it to an almost empty tank on the forecourt then fill up. Its fairly handy and quite straightforward.

Perfect! Would the week be a enough to run it through? and should I do everytime I fill her up?

A week should be OK, especially with longer spins here and there. You can do no harm if you overdose with Dipetane. As said above there are markings on the bottle.

And stay out of the overtaking lane unless you're overtaking :D

Looks to me like it's not getting quite enough air. How's the air filter? Servicing generally? Intake/exhaust leaks?

I would look into it a bit more too. Above 20% CO is a fail on this car not the usual 30%. I think it would be worth a throttle body clean, diagnostic check and a check to see the full service was actually done, particularly the air filter and spark plugs. Be very surprised if an italian tune and dipetane would drop it by 19% although if you just dodder around and sit in traffic alot it might do.

I your willing to gamble running an stp pre nct pack through it first and then putting the dipetane into a fresh tank of maxol juice for the test would give it a better chance.

I used it before and it does a good job. Lots of garages and motor factors sell it.

Dipetane does more for a diesel than a petrol in my experience. Passing a doe emmisions test is very handy too.

NCT tonight, wish me luck! I've been using the Dipetane for over a week now and we actually had a sudden house move so the car has been getting a lot of action!

    Stupid Question coming up...
How long does it take to properly warm the car up and would you recommend I get into the high revs to do so? I tend to be an early gear changer, don't like hearing the engine y'know, so to do an "Italian Tune up" (ha, I love that term!) do I bring the car to the red line in a low gear (sounds dangerous to me)?

Thanks for all your help and suggestions and I will be back to let ye know how I got on. Ekkkk, hope this works!

Drive the car gently for say 10 minutes at least until the engine warms up properly. Then you can open the throttle in a 3rd of 4th gear, depends on the speed you are doing. You do not need to go to the red line.

    The car passed! WOOHOO!

Absolutely delighted €38 (retest and Dipetane) brought it down to 0.07% (from 0.39%) absolute bargin :)

Thanks again for the the suggestions and replies, much appreciated!

That's just cruel! Though if I can get it down 0.32%, I'm sure you can do it too!
