Hi, I am wondering how long it takes to receive a log book after it was posted by the previous owner? I have to declare a second hand car just bought offroad, but as it has to be done within 10 days of sale I am wondering if I get my log book on time.

10 days should be enough, it's usually about a week.

I doubt you will, they can take weeks. You might get lucky and have it within the 10 days but I wouldnt count on it unfortunately.

but there seems to be no option to declare it until you have a log book, as its number is required for the declaration :-(

I suppose it is sent off now? Otherwise get a couple snaps of it so you have the identification number etc.

The longest wait for a transfer of ownership is the time it takes the current owner to post it.

Once it goes in the post you should have a new VLC back within 2 weeks. In some cases well within 10 days.

I've done it before on many occasions, told the buyer I posted the VLC but in fact it was 3 days afterwards when I done it due to things that I needed to do!

I just went through exact same thing, and after getting various advice here on boards from various posters in various threads, I made it no problem.

    Here's steps I've taken.
    1. Logbook signed on Monday 25th for change of ownership. My email address filled up among other new-keepers details.
    2. I delivered logbook directly to Department of Transport in Shannon on Monday 25th and handed it to lady behind the counter there.
    3. On Thursday 28th, motortax website on "Vehicle Transaction Enquiry" showed "Transferred to individual on 25/05/2014" and "Notified on 26/05/2014".
    4. Straight away I used an option to declare vehicle off the road on motortax.ie website. As I didn't know the PIN, I requested PIN retrieval, and upon filling details (vehicle reg no, name, address) I received PIN on email within a minute. I used that PIN to declare vehicle off the road online on motortax.ie website.

All straight and simple - job done within 3 days...

Just to clarify - I did point 2, just because I was in Shannon anyway. I'm sure regular post would be as good, maybe just one or two days longer. Possibly express post might be an option. Main point is though, that you can declare vehicle off the road online, even before receiving your logbook in the post.
