Insufficient Storage for Yosemite update

Hi, hopefully a stupid question, but when the Yosemite 10.10.3 update tells me I need 6.51GB disk space to update, is that 6.51GB that will be gone forever, or is it just temporary for the time it takes to upgrade?

I have a 128gb Macbook air so have always been tight for space, always just about managed to get updates installed, but with about 4GB space, I'm struggling this time around.

Is it possible to use an external hard drive to install the update?
