    Hi

I am looking at purchasing a 2011 Renault Grand Scenic automatic.
I was just wondering if anyone had any experience with them, especially in respect of the automatic, or if anyone has come across issues with the automatic gearboxes in them.
I know history tells us that Renault reliability has always been an issue but i thin kit is greatly improved to be fair and i have been driving renaults for 10 years + and cant say i have had too many problems, but i have never had an automatic and am looking some feedback

    Thanks in advance
    JB

I can't say much on the gearbox but the 1.5dci engine is well sorted by 2011 and quite a reliable lump. In general any of the Renaults are quite reliable in recent years they are just struggling to shake to bad image from early 2000's and the reliability issues some models had. This can be a good thing for buyers as it makes them substantially cheaper than vw or ford competition.

I recently bought a 2011 renault megane and like it a lot very comfortable car and there is just something abit different about them abit more quirky compared to a golf or focus. While they are not as good as a golf in every category they are still a very decent car.

We have a 2010, don't know anything about the auto. They are great people movers and supremely spacious and versatile. 1.5dci is frugal and the engine has been trouble free. However we had had some issues:

Blocked screen drain holes resulted in water ingress, big job to dry out, seats, trim, etc removed. Common issue, get the drain holes cleared. (Wheel arch liner out, not a big job, 5 mins a side with the right tools)

    Failed alternator.

    Seized interior fan, blown resistor.

    Various other minor electrical gremlins.

    Many rattles.

To be honest our car makes a myth of the 'post 2008 Renaults are much better' line. It has proved very similar to the 2006 Megane we had, albeit this one has not blown any bulbs.

2010 Scenic 1.5 dci here. Our car also makes a myth of the 'post 2008 Renaults are much better' line. Electric handbrake replaced under warranty after only a year. Turbo replaced at 80,000km (Renault payed 70% of it) Electric handbrake which is also automatic refuses to release sometimes on steep inclines which causes the clutch to start burning. Have to get another new turbo now at 150,000km as it is whining badly. Car was well looked after always serviced on time and always by a Renault dealer. Never again....

The Scenic comes with a EDC. It is a dual clutch gearbox made by Getrag, but I am not sure which one...

Getrag themselves say it is 7-speed 7DCT300, but Renault says it is 6-speed. And from the brochure it seems it is limited to 250Nm of torque too - they slimmed the engine from 260Nm with manual to 240Nm when paired with EDC. That would make it 6DCT250 - the same that Ford is using with smaller engines - they call it DPS6.

This way or another, it is a fine gearbox, I just don't know if it was already installed in model year 2011. Unfortunately I just started to see some reports with problems with it on some Fords.

I was considering it myself and tried to test drive one around month ago... Kearys Renault in Cork City still have that one in stock. But, and that is my typical experience with them, it was too much of a hassle. I guess I look too cheap for this fine establishment or they prefer to use that car internally. :D

So cannot really comment from experience.

If you are looking for a decent automatic seven seater for around 15k - you're choices are rather limited:
    - Ford Grand C-Max, S-Max or Galaxy with Powershift (model year 2010 and later). You will have hard time finding one for that money though.
    - Renault Scenic (on condition it is the EDC)

    - Citreon C4GP and Peugeot 5008 from ~2011 have a joke, not a gearbox. From late 2015 they come with much better box called EAT6 - but you'd be looking at ~€28k for one.
    - Santa Fe Auto has astronomical tax of €1200 per year.
    - Can't find any Quashai+2 with auto
    - Volvo XC90 - very expensive for the year/mileage
    - Zafira could make sense, but only 2008. They did not have an efficient automatic, so the tax on a later model would kill an Irish buyer.
    - Alhambra, Touran, Sharan - all rare with auto, especially after 2008. And be careful to buy only with 6-speed DSG.

    - You might consider a Mercedes E-Class estate. There were versions with additional two seats in the boot. Volvo did the V70 as well - but only previous generation, it is probably outside of the interest for you...

    - The last, but a not the least... Toyota Prius+... Unfortunately it was sold from 2013, are veeeery rare and cost a lot more. On top of that majority of the advertised Pri+ are the Prius Alphas imported from Japan (most of the Alphas are 5-seaters).

There is one decent-looking Prius+ in Dublin at VW dealer for 23k - I know it is much more money, but I would take it everytime over the Scenic, even if you need to borrow more... https://www.donedeal.ie/cars-for-sale/toyota-prius-hybrid-4dr-automatic-7-seater-www-fr/11719883
