Sweet spot price for new bike

Ok its "not another new bike thread" thread!

Looking to upgrade my road bike. It will be a training bike and raced in triathlons (sorry, yes I said the word!).

I am looking for a bike to get UCI legal weight ultimately with pedals/bottle cages etc. Currently that is beyond my budget so I plan to stretch for what I can, and aim to upgrade components. I am in Canada and budget is $4k approx.

    Questions:
    1. Is there much of a difference to be noticed between bikes in the 7.4-7.8kg range (where most lie at that price without pedals/bottle cage) and a sub 7kg bike or will it make little practical difference. PS I dont have any weight to lose on my body!
    2. Would I be best going for a middle frame and middle groupset (eg Trek Emonda SL6 with ultegra) and aiming subsequently to upgrade components/wheels or perhaps get better frame (eg Trek Emonda SLR) and kit out with 105 componenst, thinking perhaps this might make upgrades easier.

Thoughts please! PS please dont mention canyon or rose, unless you want to send one over to me :(

Nice, but importing to Canada is a big sting with tax :(

What part of Canada are you in? There has to be a way of shipping it to a US address and driving it over the border. Similar I parcel motel.

Also, I thought NAFTA meant no import duty between the US and Canada.

I have a thing for Guru bikes. My first Alu+carbon fork bike was a Guru.

Sure go on holidays and pick it up build it and then fly home you'd probably still be under your 4k limit. :D

Is there no Canadian site to ask this question? It's unlikely us Irish resident folk would be expert in CA or US bike deals, although there is always Canyon or Rose who will ship outside EU Tax free and you pay the local taxes
They could hardly be prohibitive given that most bikes or parts would be imported into CA anyway.

Good point maybe I should go the Canyon/Rose route. I do know however that the customs here are variable and it is unpredictable how much tax they will apply.

With regards to a "Toronto Boards", I have not found one since I left the green isle :(

    :(

I would look at the Rose web site and see what they quote. Just pick any bike and select the shipping to Canada and see what comes out.
I know if I ship one to me here in Switzerland, they take off the German VAT, then add the Swiss VAT and add 1% fee. They sort out all the paperwork so there is no extra customs fees to surprise you later on. I don't know if this is just an agreement for Switzerland or any non EU country.
If trying that doesn't work, just send them an email. Their customer service is excellent and you should get a prompt answer - in English!
