Components? Would this not be the changeover from one model to another, meaning a write-off of parts that they won't use?

This could interpreted any number of ways. first thing I thought of was "Writing off the deficit of cost to manufacture vs sales made"

Sony have a very good track record in terms of suppporting their devices for long periods of time (PS2 was supported for almost 14 years), so I doubt that they'll be cutting off their flagship portable device any time soon.

    Exactly, can't see it.

They supported the PSP long enough, despite it being cracked with cfw.

They only supported it that long since it unexpectedly became massive in Japan because of Monster Hunter. A lot of companies supporting the PSP in the West regretted bringing over a lot of their later games to the West, Square in particular got quite burned by it which was unfortunate.
