A day apparently of rouleurs vs sprinters. Very short stage as shown by the fact they've just started. So should presumably be mad in terms of attacks.

    Top ten on GC now:

    1 Alberto Contador (Spa) Tinkoff-Saxo 65:04:59
2 Mikel Landa Meana (Spa) Astana Pro Team 0:04:02
3 Fabio Aru (Ita) Astana Pro Team 0:04:52
4 Andrey Amador (CRc) Movistar Team 0:05:48
5 Yury Trofimov (Rus) Team Katusha 0:08:27
6 Leopold Konig (Cze) Team Sky 0:09:21
7 Damiano Caruso (Ita) BMC Racing Team 0:09:52
    8 Steven Kruijswijk (Ned) Team LottoNL-Jumbo 0:11:40
    9 Alexandre Geniez (Fra) FDJ.fr 0:12:48
10 Ryder Hesjedal (Can) Cannondale-Garmin Pro Cycling Team 0:12:49

Above shows how GC isn't the whole story. Someone like Kruijswijk in 8th has been brilliantly active whilst I've hardly noticed Caruso or Konig in the places above him.

When I go to the menu, it says, that Cycling is on.When I switch on channel, It's tennis. However, there is a prominent advertisement for Peugeot in the background.

Am in a state my ignorance myself. What's that? Namby-pamby, silver-spooned tennis wa..ers? Ah come on, that's a small bit unfair probably. You can't generalise an entire sport like that.

Stunning looking scenery around Lake Como seems to main thing to focus on in the few minutes I've seen. Look to be rushing towards a bunch sprint with 3 men out front little over a minute ahead with 40 kms or so left.

Oh and Major General Sir Evelyn Webb-Carter is sending out free medals commemorating the Battle of Waterloo of 1815 if anyone's interested.

Besides the aesthetics it should give you a warm patriotic glow as long as you can convince yourself your greater soul dwells within the eternal glory of the British Empire.

In terms of the racing what a stupid self-sabotage by Gretsch there when he could be off with Hansen.

It was a privilege, even in a humble way, to be part of it.

In slightly more helpful manner it really was a nothing stage in terms of drama. The scenery was by far the best thing about it. Adam Hansen & a couple of others shot of the front near the end, Hansen got left on his own cos of squabbling over the workload, and depite a great descent by Paolini which briefly looked dangerous, it ended in a bunch sprint which Lampre controlled well & won with Modolo.

Virenque is very popular in France, he does commentating for Eurosport France. He emerged largely unscathed by the whole Festina affair despite lying about it far more than the others

I never did understand why Festina continues to be associated with him as to me it straight away reminds me of the whole Festina affair, but obviously that isn't true so the audience as a whole.

I don't understand why I cant see the cycling on Eurosport player though. Surely they can still stream it...

As for Virenque, he was the poster boy for French cycling during the "Armstrong" era and for some reason still seems to held in some regard. Maybe he's the French eamonn dunphy, you either love him or hate him.

Yeah, I knew he was still popular, but Festina using him for advertising, what kind of message is that? cheat get caught and we'll still pay you long after you've retired. He is shown next to a car rather than a bike, is that subtle joke? Why not go the whole hog and show home using his watch to time drug dosages.

No way Deutsch Telecom would touch Ulrich with a barge pole.

No way Deutsch Telecom would touch Ulrich with a barge pole.

Don't kid yourself. They would have Ulrich front & centre if he was popular. Germany, however, have loads of high level sports people. WC winning football team, CL winners Bayern, Steffi Graf etc etc etc. They even have current top level cyclists.

A drug era cyclist, and one that basically spent his career getting beat by an american, is never going to be that well remembered.

Virenque 'won' the polka dot jersey 7 times. That huge in an era when France have had nothing else worthy to cheer about in cycling (cycling being much bigger in the public eye in France that Germany)
