Has anyone ever set up a satellite dish as a microphone?

    Hi,
I want to hear the wildlife clearer that live around the lake just behind my house.

I was thinking of using a dish with a quality microphone? Does anyone know if this would work?

It would depend on the placement of the mike.

I dare say that it would be easier to align a circular dish rather than a sky dish but a metal dish would be prohibitively heavy.

    Have a look here:http://www.videomaker.com/article/17144-how-to-build-a-parabolic-mic-dish
However, it might be easier to buy one on ebay....just search for "parabolic microphone".....

Yes, tried this years ago as an experiment and it actually worked!

It was a long time ago so not 100% on the details but pretty sure it was back when Sky was Analogue and the dishes were much bigger, it was an offset dish though and we were using a professional mike, amp and speaker as my buddy was in a band at the time, the mike was placed in the LNB's position and the volume had to be turned up pretty high on the amp.

Also, as the dish is offset you need to aim it way lower than you think.

Fulwell Acoustic Mirror was built in 1917 to help detect German airships following a series of Zeppelin raids on the North East coast.

It reflected sound detected by a microphone in front of the dish to an operator who could alert the authorities of approaching Zeppelins.
Using sound detection methods learnt in the trenches, it was designed to give a 15-minute warning of approaching enemy airships.
