Worth Repairing

    Hi all

Just wondering what peoples opinions are on my current situation. Head Gasket went in my 07 Astra 1.4 Petrol while on the motorway home, engine shut off and I rolled to halt. Got an independent garage to have a look and looks like the engine block has been damaged, they also found the timing chain is stretched and think the previous owner may have been using the wrong variant of oil in it. Long and the short of it is its going to be €1200 to fix it as the need to send the engine to a specialists plus will be 3 days labour to fix it. Am currently trying to get a price from a few other garages but expect them to be in the same ballpark.

Question is. is this worth fixing or would i be as well try get rid of the car on donedeal? I had planned on changing cars in a few months as its no longer practical for me, its the 3 door GTC, so I'm wondering am as well just be rid of it now instead of pouring money into repairs only to sell it on in a few months anyway. Wonder would it be worth anything as a trade in either?

Definitely worth repairing but a replacement engine would be cheaper than what you've been quoted.

I'd prefer to repair it all right but that price is hard to stomach. Would be I better off going to an opel dealership and get a quote from them or try source a replacement engine somewhere and ask a garage to fit it?

I wouldn't bother with a replacement engine. Pay a premium to have it mended and you won't have to pay again in 6 or 12 months time. I'm speaking from experience here, finding a decent z14xep in a breakers anywhere in this country is about as likely to happen as rita ora going to bed with me tonight.

I'd stay well clear of a main dealer, they will probably quote you for a brand new engine and you will need to be sitting down when you hear that price.

You would not get a decent replacement engine for one of these and fit it for 1200 euro. Would be doing well to find a secondhand engine for one at any price.

@op, 1200 euro doesn't sound expensive for sorting out one of these. My only comment would be to ensure that the garage would stand over the job ... it would be disaster to spend 1200 euro if the job was not good / gave problems a few months later.

2007 GTC still making good money, well worth sorting the car out. If you try selling / trading it as it is, you will get crap offers.

It's been left in to be fixed, quoted approximately €800 but they need to have a look before they confirm price. Thanks for advice lads.
