Money worries.....internship

    Hi all,

I'm looking for a bit of advice or a push in the right direction from anyone who has been in a similar situation.

I know this problem isnt very big on the greater scale of things but it's stressing me no end.

I'm 27 and left my job a year ago to retrain and I'm v glad I decided to do so and I realised it would be a while before I start making good money again.

I've been lucky enough to get a paid internship for 3 months in Dublin starting in a few weeks. I realise that most internships are unpaid and that I am so lucky this one is paid but I'm still worrying about making ends meet and making it work.

I'm living down the country with my parents having lived away from home since I was 18 until last year but the internship means I will have to find somewhere to rent in Dublin for 3 months. This is mainly where the problem lies.
As everyone knows Dublin rents are crazy at the moment and even during the summer period it seems Im looking at 550e pm minimum for a single room in a house share plus bills. Im keeping an eye on daft at the moment.

The internship pays 400e per week gross, so I'm estimating maybe 330e per week after tax. I could live on this no problem but it's the first months rent and deposit that is killing me.

I'm on social welfare at the moment and I simply dont have 1000e plus for first months rent and deposit and nobody that I can borrow it off. I can't see the bank giving out money to someone on the dole either. I also need to buy some suitable office clothes. Penneys will do fine but it's still more money that I don't have.

This is something I want to do and I hope it doesn't sound like I'm complaining about this opportunity but I don't see how I can actually get myself set up to do it as I have nothing to meet these start up costs.

I provisionally accepted the offer over the phone and waiting on my contract before I do anything else about it. I was so happy when I got the call yesterday but now the realisation of what I need is worrying me big time. Don't want to have to turn this down and become one of those 'Id be better off on the dole' type people as I just hate that mentality but feel like I'm stuck in a hole too.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Can your parents lend you the money for your deposit and first months rent then you pay them back in instalments? Or, is there a friend you could stay with in Dublin for the first month while you get a deposit saved?

Failing that - either you Community Welfare Officer or St Vincent de Paul might be able to help you with a grant towards your deposit and rent.

As for work clothes - you wont need much to start off with - plain trousers and a cheap blazer and some of your own tops underneath. You can add to it down the line as your finances improve.

I know DCU and UCD rent out rooms in their on campus accommodation during the summer. DCU have an online booking form, and UCD you e-mail them to inquire about bookings. You could possibly look at staying somewhere Sunday -Thursday night and travel home at the weekends? Or a hostel would be another option, where you wouldn't have to pay a big deposit up front?

Other idea would be to post a query on your fb page if you have one, you might find a friend of a friend who is in college but needs to hold on to a place during the summer, that would rent it out to you, without need for big deposit.

Try student accoodation, they rent over the summer shortterm.
There are some hotels that do long term room rental for special pricw. Worth checking out.
If your're on fb could you post a room wanted msg. Someone might have something for a short term let.
Beat of luck with the internship
