I have worked for over 35 years without a break. The last company I worked for just under 30 years but was laid off last year. I am 54 and have just gone on JA. I have been called to a group meeting on Thurs and I take it I will than have a 1 to 1 there after. I really want to to do something ( work) but I would be scared to be put out brushing the streets for the council as I do not see that been of any benefit as I need to do something that I will have a future. How do I handle this ? Thanks in advance I have read all this tread .

The group meeting is just a group meeting with video and general talk etc., and after that you will be invited to a one on one meeting. Go prepared with a plan and documentation for jobs you have applied for and/or courses you would like to do or internships etc. Important thing is to be proactive and go in with evidence of that. Check into Back to Education Allowance and eligibility time etc.

Yep, that's exactly it - I was similarly nervous in a similar situation, but it is just a prelim to a one-to-one, where they'll try to come up with some kind of activity that matches your aims and skills: part-time courses, SYOB, that sort of thing. No-one is going to force you into anything at this stage at least, just try to help you.
