I've tried everything even jobs that I would be getting paid less in than when on the dole. Ive had interviews but every single job out there even ones that require zero intelligence like cleaning someones toilet for example requires you have a leaving certificate or higher.

How do you instruct someone like myself who hasn't had a full time job in Ireland ( I worked abroad for three years ) since 2002? since I came back from abroad in 2007 I havnt had a proper full time job. I've zero education ( Junior Cert ). going abroad was easy getting a job in the likes of the UK. they couldnt care less about leaving cert for working behind the bar etc etc. But here in Ireland? forget it.

So where am I going wrong, what steps should I take to remedy this hole I put myself in no doubt?

    cheers

First of all no job requires zero intelligence, that's insulting to both yourself and to other people who do those jobs. Would you try to go back and do your leaving cert?

You're right I should have used the word education rather than intelligence. How can I go back and do my leaving cert? I'm over 30 years old.

Contact your local ETB adult education guidance office. They'll point you in the right direction.

Pearse college Crumlin do adult leaving cert. start with a phone call to them and let us know how you get on. It's still tough out there for job seekers so don't beat yourself up but do get moving on getting some qualifications. Best of luck.

You need to get yourself into education and qualifications anything. Don't lose heart see it as a learning curve. I found this. http://learningsouthdublin.ie/
Try and get yourself into jobs where they encourage employees to further their education etc. If you do the leaving you can go on to diploma etc. and further.

My Dad couldn't continue education through the usual way and left school at fourteen. Long long time ago it was just the way it was. He continued to study whilst working. It's tough and it took him a lot longer. He went all the way to PHD level though he ended up graduating when I was 10 ish?? Lots of people do their education at a mature age etc.

I know parents of friends who went back to complete secondary school. You can do it!

    Here are some links.

Talk to your local VEC - for Dublin City it's CDVEC http://www.cdetb.ie/ they focus on adults. they have adult education officers etc.

I lied on my CV and said I had a LC. Once I got a few years experience, no one really cared that I didn't have it going forward.
Plenty of half decent paying jobs don't require you to have it.
You can go back and do it through the BTEA scheme

Rather than go back and do the Leaving Cert, which is usually only a door opener to the next bit of education, would you not go and do some training in an area that interests you?

If you are on the dole then there must be FAS courses/further education available to you that can help you get some qualifications on your CV?

I don't want to seem like I'm encouraging you to lie on your CV, but... popping it down will do no harm at all. Most people your age won't even have it on their CV because it's usually assumed that you've done it, especially if you have University qualifications down. They also won't ask you to produce proof of your results.

However, it sounds like you're in a bit of a rut. And I would suggest studying for some type of qualification.

If you would like to go back to education but you're not entirely sure what to study or whether you're able to, then I would suggest doing an "Access Course", which many Universities and some ITs around the country offer. This type of course is aimed at people who didn't get the best LC results for whatever reason, or none at all. You spend a year studying a number of University level modules and study skills courses and then you can apply for a Degree level course at that institution, and you get the benefit of great help from your tutors every step of the way. Plus it's usually a part-time endeavour so you can also work while undertaking it. It might be something you're interested in. Good luck OP.

Einstein once said, "Try not to become a man of success, but rather try to become a man of value". Put time into yourself - if you don't want to do the LC, then learn a skill or a trade. Even if it doesn't lead directly to increased job prospects, putting time into developing yourself as a person will be rewarding.
