    Hi guys,

Not sure if this is the right forum to put this in, so please fell free to move Mods if you thinks it more suited somewhere else!

Having a bit of trouble with the USB ports on my Laptop at the moment, its a HP G62 with windows 7.
When I plug in a device (USB, Phone, anything) I get a ding sound (not the normal ding however) but I don't get anything in my computer, I get no windows explorer to open the device, its like nothing is plugged in.

I tried searching online and found info about updating the drivers, which I tried to do, but windows is telling me the most up-to-date drivers are installed. I'm not sure what to try next.

Any ideas would be very welcome!

If you look in My Computer do you see the device listed?

I have never allowed an operating system to automatically decide what to do when a USB device is plugged in.

Yes looked in My Computer, no sign of it!

    Try this:

    Unplug all your USB devices.

Right-click on My Computer, select "Manage" (enter your password if UAC is set to require it), then go to System Tools > Device Manager. Look for any devices that have a warning/error symbol on them (yellow hazard sign or red circle with a cross in it), right-click them and select Uninstall. Leave the "delete driver" box unchecked. Wait for the uninstall to finish. Click the "scan for hardware changes" button or select Action > Scan For Hardware Changes. This is basically to make sure that the OS is happy with everything before we add USB devices again.

Connect a single USB device to a given port, and check if it's detected correctly. If it works, repeat for other devices. If not, find whatever new device has been added, right-click it and select "Uninstall". This time check the box to delete the driver. Remove the device. Scan for hardware changes again, then once that's finished, plug in your USB device.

If it still doesn't work, it's time to start digging through Event Viewer logs.
