DHL Import Tax

I have just received a package containing clothing from DHL shipped from Australia, the total value including shipping ( of which there was no charge ) was AUD 205, roughly around 147 euro. I expected the import duty of 23%, so roughly around 34 euro, and the package was delivered with an invoice for 76 euro import tax charge. I questioned the delivery man, who said just take the package and call the office and sort it out from there. I figured they made an error and charged the 205 in euro, which I know would incur extra charges for going over 150 euro, plus obviously more tax. He agreed it was too much, and gave me another number to call, which I did, and the next person I spoke to said that it was correct, as there was a fee for not declaring the freight charge? As my shipping costs were zero, is this the freight cost to the company which I ordered from, and if so, it is surely not to be at my cost? I have the package unopened, but haven't paid over any money for the import charges yet.

If there is no shipping value declared on the parcel, DHL will estimate it, usually overestimated of course. They then charge vat on this amount.

Since the 147 includes shipping fees (it wasn't free, just included in the price you paid) tell them you want a refund on this excess vat charged on shipping and that you will provide the invoice showing total amount paid.

Did you not receive a breakdown of the charges? There will also be a 10 euro DHL admin fee included in that. DHL's addition of extra shipping costs brought it over 150 euro so there is likely to be duty also included.

The real amount you should have to pay at current exchange rate is 146.27 @ 23% = 33.64 + 10 admin fee = 44.64

Shipping charge must be stated seperately by the sender - if not a standard DHL shipping charge will be applied by customs (not DHL)

As goods are clothing, duty will be 12% as the value will be over €150 including shipping charge.

    so, say 147 + 35 shipping applied = 182 value

    duty 21.84
    vat 41.86
    dhl fee 10.00
    vat on fee 1.35

    total 75.05

You probably would need to appeal it and ask for the shipper to send a breakdown of cost of goods + shipping and also give proof of amount paid (paypal recipt or credit card statement).

Rememebr this is a custom issue and DHL are simply following customs regulations.
