Engine problem

Car: '01 MGF with the Rover K-series 1.6l petrol engine, 79k miles

Issue: car always starts, idles perfectly fine. Since last week the car struggles quite randomly at lower revs (typically below 3k rpm) when trying to speed up / increase revs. When you change gears (up or down!) you might get a few seconds of better responses

The problem is barely there over 4k rpm

Engine never cuts out. There is no warning light / EML light or anything like that

Issue is there when the engine is both cold and warm. The engine is NOT overheating. The engine revs freely all the way up to 7k rpm without issues (once you manage to get it above 4k rpm).

When driving for about 15 minutes the problem could be completely gone for another 30 minutes or so, just to come back again

I changed oil + filter a few days ago, made no difference

My uneducated guess is it's not an injection / coil / spark plug / ignition / fuel filter / air filter / engine management issue, but maybe a sensor telling the ECU porky pies so the fuel / air mixture is all over the shop?

Any help appreciated - but maybe someone with experience of the K-series engine and a similar problem would be best placed to give me some specific things to check out?
