You will need to go to the NDLS website and make a booking or you can drop in to your chosen NDLS centre and wait- there are fewer guarantees you'll be seen the later you go in- you're better off going in first thing in the morning, ideally at 9am. They are open a half day on Saturday. You might be seen straight away or you might be waiting an hour or two.

From the NDLS website you can download and fill out a D201- application for a learner permit.

If you haven't done so, you will need to make a driving test booking for the categories you want on your pemit. If you made a booking last time and went on to postpone the driving test, your booking will still stand but you will need to provide evidence that it is still outstanding. If you have failed a driving test in the last two years you will need to provide evidence of this (you will have the benefit of having a 2 year learner permit instead of a 1 year this time).

If you haven't attended an NDLS office in the past you will need to provide valid evidence of PPSN.

If your address has changed, you will need to provide valid evidence.

If you answer yes to any driver fitness questions then you will need to provide a medical report if there isn't one on file. Equally, if your learner permit was for trucks or buses you will need to provide a medical report (assuming you don't still have one on file- ie if you provided a 10 year medical report a few years ago).

If something has changed with your eyesight (such as having had laser eye surgery), you will need to provide a new eyesight report. If you already wear glasses or if you wish to 'self declare' that you now need to wear glasses then you won't need an eyesight report. If nothing has changed, you don't need an eyesight report.

If your name has changed (marriage or divorce or maybe you wish to add a middle name) then you will have to provide documents to support this. However, if you wish to drop your middle name then no evidence is required. If you wish to change your name to a derivative (ie from James to Jimmy), no evidence is required.

You aren't required to bring photos- they will take your picture at the centre.

    The fee is €35.

Assuming there are no problems with your application or documents, you will receive your new permit in the post in a couple of weeks. If there are problems it could take up to six weeks-ish.

Do I need to book a test before I book my appointment with the NDLS?

As long as it's booked before you go for the appointment you're fine.
