My 04 1.4 bora is at 115000 miles and it's starting to burn oil. I need to top it up every 100 miles or so. What could be causing it and how is it fixed?

It's not leaking any oil because I have left it stationary for a while and there are no pools forming and the level doesn't drop. There is no black smoke coming from the exhaust either.

I'm using synthetic oil which is what's required for the bora, should I start using cheaper oil seen as it's burning it anyway?

It's common with vw's 1.4 engine of that era. The piston rings are worn and allowing oil into the combustion chamber. It will be an issue for nct also as the emissions will fail.

Might be head gasket? Open radiator cap - see if water mixed with oil?

How much are you topping it up by and what oil are you using??

Can you try and establish the oil consumption in miles/Litre or whatever, if its
only starting to burn oil then it should be minimal, the amount required to top up the Bora between high/low marks is 1 litre.

The valve stems seals and guides also give trouble on the Bora ,oil passes down the valves and burns up .you will notice this when you start the car after it was sitting for a while, smoke will come from the exhaust on start up,have someone check this when you start the car ,if its not the valve seals its the piston rings that is the problem .

Check your pcv valves and breather hoses and the sump bung before you go taking the engine apart.
