    Hi,
I opened my laptop a few days ago to discover a black screen, on turning on I can hear the fan running, the power button and power light both come on, I'm sure I can hear the hdd running but the hdd light is not coming on at all. I should also point out that the battery doesn't hold a charge for more than a minute or two. When I load a disc it also seems to load. I haven't got a clue about these things but I googled it and tried these things
1- removed the battery, pushed the power button for 1 minute and restart without the battery, no good
2- removed the hard drive and tried to start, same
3- removed the ram sticks and switched them, tried one on its own in both slots, then the other on its own in both slots, no difference
the charger is a replacement but was working fine till now, I never backed anything up (I know, I know!!!!)
and I had loads of photos, movies, and bookmarks. I would like to try and fix it before I would head to the shop, if anyone has any advice I would really, really appreciate it,
    thanks

You really need to connect the laptop to a TV or external monitor to check if it's just a screen issue.

    Hi,
thanks for replying, I forgot to say but i also tried that and no go. There are also no "beeps"(this apparently means something?) on startup, but I'm guessing if it was a screen issue the hdd light would have come on?

Right, well you could try and load a linux live distro onto a cd/USB and see does the laptop boot from that. If so and your hd isn't dead you could see it and try transfer files off. Alternatively get a suitable hd caddy, pop laptop hd in and connect to another computer.

Ok, will give this a go to see how it goes, thanks for your replies

The graphics may have become unsoldered from the motherboard.
