Looking for something a little bigger than my micra for when I pass my test, biggest engine size I'd be looking at is a 1.4 for tax and insurance reasons, must be decent on fuel as it'll do a lot of city driving.

Thinking either a MkII focus, a Mazda 3 or a Corolla if one comes along for the right money.

    What would people recommend?

A 1.4 litre Corolla would be the most lively of that list. You will pay good money for them though so on your budget you will most likely be looking at a slightly older example than a Focus or 3.

Yeah it's probably at the higher end of what I could spend but I wouldn't mind waiting a bit if it's worth it, my da has an 01 lift back that he adores, but I can't stand them myself as they just don't fit taller people :p

You should be able to get a newer shaped one within your budget:

For me it would be a Toyota Corolla as they can go on for more than 20 years, as there are plenty of ones from the early 90's still on the roads today, and the good news for you is that there are over 150 for sale on Done Deal made between 2002 and 2004 within your price range or a little bit over whereby you might be able to get it down to 2500 Euros. Most importantly. Don't rush. Take your time to find a really good one, and even if its an 02. you will get 10 years out of it if looked after.

Also, get a Luna if possible! Much nicer place to be then the somewhat drab Terra model.
